Today Jason made his weekly pilgrimage to the Barnes & Noble cafe to work on his National Board certification in peace. A snowy day and an inspiring post by Jamie reminded me that intentional mothering might as well start with a day at home.
While the kids played in the kitchen, I made myself a cup of tea, kneaded a batch of whole wheat bread dough, and set it out to rise.
I wrapped James for his nap – he was asleep before I finished knotting.
When he woke up, I peeled sweet potatoes for a sweet potato casserole. I’ve created a healthier version of my mom’s classic recipe, and we like to eat it as a breakfast dish.
We played dominoes.
We read. Lots and lots.
And while Simone shared her Duplos with James, I wrote a letter to my best friend.
Sometimes, in the hustle and bustle of keeping a household running smoothly with children, I forget that the laundry and meals and mopped floors aren’t really the point. They’re necessary jobs, of course, but that doesn’t mean they should take first priority. There’s value in slowing down, in being there. This evening I wrapped James in a quick rebozo, and while usually I would stand at the counter checking my email while swaying him to sleep, I paced the dimming bedroom as his warm little cheek nodded against my chest. A difference of five minutes…but what a difference it made to me.

I love her line of “peace over productivity.”
Simone’s short hair is adorable!

It’s the kids’ new favorite book. It is so sweet and perfect for the day after a rainy day.
I hope you’re doing well.
This was a lovely post! What great inspiration for a new mom!
I love the wrap. Is that ecru or natural?
Ecru.
The more silvery-toned version, not Golden.
I didn’t even know there was a more silvery-toned version. I just bought one as well…. it’s a size 5 though, but I wanted a 6, so I’m hoping it works out well. Originally, I wanted pfau garnet, but it’s such a beast, I thought I would work my way up to that. lol
There’s Natural, Ecru, and Golden Ecru…mine’s just Ecru, less silvery than Natural but less golden than Golden. I think it’s most common. I love it, it could be my one and only!
I think mine is just Ecru…. I will have to check on that. Eee! Now I’m excited to get it! What size is yours?
It’s a 5. Love it! I got it BNIB and it was so scratchy. But now it’s silky and just amazing.
I received the wrap and love it. Probably not a go-to summer wrap, but still….. nice and heavy, supportive…. love. And the color is much better in real life. Pics do not do it justice.
Unfortunately, I now have a wrap stash that I love, but wayyyyy too many, so I need to sell. This is going to be hard. lol
Ok, I feel better about the size now. Mine is used, but it was a first time owner. I couldn’t find it new. I will let you know how it goes.
I liked this: “intentional mothering might as well start with a day at home.”
Especially because we did that this week, and I was reminded of how much more intentional I am when we stay at home all day rather than running errands or driving around – even to something “intentional” like the library.
Thanks for the reminder!
Will you please post the sweet potato casserole recipe?
I love your little space, thank you for sharing your beautiful family with all of us. Hugs to you. Juli
