If you follow me on Twitter, you already know that our sweet James Atticus was born on Thursday morning!
Apparently all of those annoying contractions over the past couple weeks were doing something. I got out of bed after a few strong contractions around 4:30 on Thursday morning, we left the house by 5:30, and I was 8 centimeters dilated when we arrived at the birthing center. (I was relieved because my contractions weren’t horrifically painful yet and I’d been waiting for them to get much worse!)
About halfway through the pushing process I found myself so tired and disheartened. James was face-up, making things more difficult, and I kept having to pause due to terrible leg cramps. I felt like a terrible failure and at one point I even asked the nurses if they were mad at me! Finally my midwife promised me that it would be over with the next contraction as long as I really pushed, and she was right.
James was born at 7:24 a.m. and placed on my chest immediately. He makes little monkey sounds when he’s hungry and has been nursing beautifully. He weighed 7 lbs 14 oz and measured 19 inches long, with dark blue eyes and a full head of dark brown hair. His coloring is almost identical to Simone’s when she was born. Luckily for us, though, he’s a much more mellow baby so far than Simone was, and we’re hoping we may have lucked out with a good sleeper.
We left the hospital Friday morning and so far things are going wonderfully as we all adjust to being a family of four. Simone is a little bewildered by the experience, but thrilled with her brother nonetheless. He is just the most beautiful thing, and we are all smitten.
